Texturized vegetable protein. Many happy cows and so versatile in recipes!

During a summer outing, we stumbled upon some peculiar chips at a vegan restaurant's checkout counter. Initially, we mistook them for high-quality vegan dog treats, so we decided to indulge our beloved, vegan canine companion with a pack. However, upon closer inspection, we realized these snacks were meant for human consumption, made from textured vegetable protein (TVP). And yes, our dog still enjoys them!

Naturally, we were curious. What on earth had we just bought, and what exactly is TVP?

Textured Vegetable Protein is a highly nutritious soy-based product, abundant in complete protein and void of fat, making it a fantastic meat substitute.

Scientifically speaking, TVP is essentially defatted soy flour. That description may not sound appetizing, but trust us, TVP is a versatile ingredient packed with fiber and easily incorporated into a variety of recipes.

In its dehydrated form, TVP resembles dry bread crumbs. To use it in your cooking, you'll need to rehydrate it with a ratio of just under 2:1, using hot water to facilitate blending.

Although TVP isn't always readily available, we make sure to stock up whenever we find it. It's an incredibly handy pantry staple for those looking to explore plant-based cuisine.

Here are some delightful recipes we've created using TVP:

TVP Tacos

VP Tacos are a delicious and easy-to-make plant-based alternative to traditional tacos. Here's a simple recipe for you to try, either with or without black beans:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein)
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons taco seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Taco shells or tortillas
  • Your favorite taco toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, vegan cheese, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the TVP and hot water or vegetable broth. Stir well and let it sit for about 10 minutes to rehydrate and soften the TVP.

  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until it begins to soften and turn translucent.

  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

  4. Stir in the rehydrated TVP, taco seasoning, salt, and pepper. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the TVP is evenly coated with the seasoning and heated through. Add the black beans, (if desired.)

  5. Warm your taco shells or tortillas according to the package instructions.

  6. Assemble your tacos by filling the shells or tortillas with the seasoned TVP mixture. Top with your favorite taco toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and vegan cheese.

TVP Chili is a hearty and flavorful plant-based dish that's perfect for those looking for a meatless alternative to traditional chili. Here's a simple recipe for you to try:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein)
  • 2 cups hot water or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 can (15 oz) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Optional toppings: chopped green onions, vegan cheese, vegan sour cream, etc.

Instructions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the TVP and hot water or vegetable broth. Stir well and let it sit for about 10 minutes to rehydrate and soften the TVP.

  2. In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell peppers, and cook for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables have softened.

  3. Stir in the rehydrated TVP, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, pinto beans, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

  4. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will allow the flavors to meld and the chili to thicken.

  5. Taste the chili and adjust the seasonings as needed. If you prefer a spicier chili, you can add more chili powder or a dash of cayenne pepper.

  6. Serve the TVP Chili hot with your favorite toppings, such as chopped green onions, vegan cheese, or vegan sour cream.

Enjoy your delicious and satisfying TVP Chili!
